Federal Elections

This seems a familiar situation for us in Tassie. A hung Parliament. The government here thus far seems to be working well together.

Federally all eyes are now on the independents. I am not a “rusted on” supporter of any party. I was a member of the Democrats for a few years many years ago.

I am drawn to some Greens environmental policies and repelled by some of their social policies. I think Tony Abbot ran a better campaign than Julia Gillard who suffered from the throwing out of Kevin Rudd.

I hope we don’t have to wait as long as we did here for a result.

Tony Abbot has surprised many during the campaign. I think many in Labor expected him to implode. He didn’t and it gives me more confidence that he may be able to perform as a Prime Minister. I liked the way he honestly admitted to lying sometimes. Probably better than lying that you never lie????????????

Being in Local Government makes me take more notice of the Governments “above” us. Their policies affect us. The Labor government’s RLCIP funding has been welcomed and well used in Kentish.

Solar Hot Water

The Kentish Visitor Information Centre has recently had a solar hot water system installed. A few years back they installed showers that visitors can use. Council decided that solar hot water would be a good long term investment. Good to see it up and I look forward to the system becoming more effective as the months move on.

Last night K.E.E.N.E.R and Kentish Council launched the Home Energy Audit Toolkits at the Sheffield Senior Citizens Hall.

Are your hydro bills climbing? Do you always get a shock when the bill comes and wonder how you used so much power?

The kits are free to borrow for 2 weeks and there is already a waiting list.

Water and Sewerage Prices

Some good news. Cradle Mountain Water have decided to not raise Kentish water prices this financial year. Other regions will see a 5% increase. Council and residents have complained about how high the water and sewerage charges are in Kentish.

This is good news. Next we want to see “postage stamp” pricing across the entire region. Everyone paying the same.

Interstate

I am currently in Sydney with my daughter having just attended a Tear Australia conference south of Sydney.

I used to work for Tear Australia and it was great to see some former colleagues.

Sometimes it would be nice to wind back the clock.

Budget 10/11

The budget is out in the wild now. You are looking at an average 2% rate increase. According to the Advocate this makes us the 5th most expensive out of 9 councils in our region. We were 3rd last year.

Budget Meeting Tomorrow Night

Winterfest

Latrobe’s Winterfest lived up to it’s name. It was wet.

Winterfest is an event of great interest in my family. We have been each year and will continue. The promise of chocolate is what entices the Wilson children. It is a good event.
